Why do we do the Annual Family Fun Day?
Portswood Church Fun Day is now a tradition spanning back almost 20 years! During those years, we’ve welcomed 100s into our building and reached out to our local community blessing them with food, face paints, entertainment, and a listening ear.
But what is the purpose?
Our church was started this way, offering free activities for children, and then inviting them in for a family friendly service.
We still want to be a church that reaches out today. Mission locally and globally is at the heart of our values. Unlike those planting our church, though we already have the benefit of established relationships, through the various activities that take place in our building and those who live and work in the area.
The Family Fun day on Saturday 23rd September 2023 (10.30am-2.30pm) allows our local community to come together, in a safe, broadly free environment, to build relationships and have fun together.
There are so many activities going on including: disco bouncy castle, facepainting/glitter tattoos, BBQ, Candy Floss, Refreshments with cakes, hook a duck, coconut shy, craft tables to name a few!
It provides our church community an opportunity to radically bless, to live out Jesus’ mandate to ‘love our neighbour’ literally and demonstrate his love practically through us. It provides us with a unifying mission activity, an opportunity to show love as He has loved us. It allows us a safe space to publicly express our faith and to experience the joy of service and hope in a thriving, vibrant and relevant church.
It provides us with opportunities to listen and pray, to invite in and build connections past and present.
On reflection we can see how the day, although for others, blesses us primarily and confirms the truth that ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive’.
