Letting
your
light
rise
in
the
darkness?

What does God have to say about the poor? Well, quite a lot actually! Many will be familiar with these verses:

“And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” Isaiah 58:10 (NIV)

“But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Luke 14:13-14 (NIV)

“He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” Proverbs 14:31 (NIV)

There are so many to choose from. If like me, you find yourself sometimes overwhelmed by the needs around you and of the world, you might find it difficult to know HOW to do this.

Here at Portswood Church, we have tried to simplify by focusing on a particular charity for a couple of months at a time. During August and September we are encouraging our fellowship to really get behind Basics Bank run by Southampton City Mission.  Increasingly each of us will be aware of more and more families and individuals who are struggling to even feed themselves.  Basics Bank aims to help those in crisis with emergency food and clothing provision.

How can we as Portswood Church and the local community help?
There is a way for everyone to help whether it be financial, gifting goods or giving your time.

Pray
Please pray for all those involved in this amazing ministry.

Financial help
We have a Fund set up to collect a financial gift to present as a church at the end of September.  If you would like to give to this fund, please go to this site or QR code:
Donate through Portswood Church here
Alternatively, if you prefer to give cash or a cheque, this can be put in an envelope marked ‘Basics Bank’ and given to one of our Morning Hosts on a Sunday.

Food help
If you are able to put a few extra tins/groceries into your trolley each week and bring them along to the Church on a Sunday, we will have a receiving bin ready and waiting.  We will collect and store everything culminating in our Harvest Festival Fun Day between 10.30am - 2.30pm on Saturday 25th September and then Sunday Harvest Festival service after which time we will deliver to Basics Bank. They are always looking for extra practical volunteer help. Why not sign up along side a friend from Portswood Church and serve together?
